Stay safe first, then call us

In the minutes after a tree falls or splits, the area can still be dangerous. Follow these steps before anyone enters the affected zone. Our team will handle everything from the moment we arrive.

Worried about what to say when you call? Simply tell us your address and what you can see. We take it from there.

  1. Stay clear of the tree Do not approach a fallen or leaning tree. Root plates can snap back without warning, and secondary branches can still drop even when the main trunk appears stable.
  2. Keep people and pets well back Establish a generous buffer, at least twice the height of the tree on all sides. Usher family, neighbours, and animals away from the zone and keep them there until our crew gives the all-clear.
  3. If the tree is touching power lines, do not touch anything Downed lines may still be live. Do not attempt to move the tree, cut any branches, or let anyone near the zone. Call Eskom (0860 037 566) or your municipality immediately, then call us. We work alongside the utility team to make the area safe.
  4. Call Tree Hugger Collective Ring 0860 017 435 or WhatsApp us. Tell us your address, what you can see, and whether power lines are involved. We'll confirm our ETA immediately.
  5. Photograph everything for your insurance claim From a safe distance, take wide shots of the tree's position relative to your property, the point of failure, and any damage to structures or vehicles. These photos, combined with our written site assessment, are exactly what your insurer needs.

What counts as a tree emergency?

Not every problem tree requires an after-hours call-out, but some situations genuinely cannot wait until Monday morning. If you are unsure, call us, we will give you an honest assessment at no charge.

  • Tree on your roof or building. Even a partial collapse creates a risk of further structural failure, water ingress, and injury. Every hour of delay compounds the damage.
  • Tree on a vehicle. A tree resting on a car or bakkie is unstable. Do not attempt to drive out from under it, shifting weight can bring additional debris down.
  • Split or cracked trunk after a storm. A tree that looks upright may be partially uprooted or have a major co-dominant stem under enormous tension. It can drop without further warning.
  • Blocked driveway or access road. If emergency vehicles such as an ambulance or fire truck cannot reach your property, immediate clearance is essential.
  • Tree down on power lines. Always treat as live. Do not approach. Call Eskom or your local municipality and then call us.
  • Severely leaning tree after a storm. A tree that has shifted its angle noticeably overnight, especially one close to a structure, has likely lost root integrity and needs urgent assessment.

Our professional tree felling service covers all of these scenarios, with the equipment and expertise to work safely even in constrained suburban gardens and storm-damaged conditions.

During peak Highveld storm season we run extended crews precisely because we know how quickly conditions can escalate across Johannesburg and surrounding areas. Whether you are in Sandton, Pretoria East, Roodepoort, or Benoni, we will get to you.

"The team arrived within two hours of my call on a Sunday night after the storm. They were calm, professional, and had the tree off my carport before midnight. I honestly can't thank them enough."

How we make the site safe

Emergency tree work is not the same as standard tree felling. The tree may be partially uprooted, under tension, resting on a structure, or tangled in power infrastructure. Our first priority is always making the immediate area safe before any cutting begins.

  • Perimeter assessment. We walk the full area before touching anything, identifying secondary hazards, hanging limbs, unstable root plates, and anything touching electrical infrastructure.
  • Coordinating with utilities. If power lines are involved, we liaise directly with the relevant utility before commencing work. No reputable tree felling team should ever cut near live conductors without utility clearance.
  • Controlled sectional removal. Rather than felling the remaining tree whole, we work in sections from the top down, controlling each piece so it lands clear of structures, vehicles, and people.
  • Structural protection. Where a tree is resting on a roof or wall, we use rigging and lowering systems to lift pieces clear rather than letting them slide, minimising additional damage.
  • Full cleanup included. We do not leave until every branch, log, and chip has been cleared from your property. There is no extra charge for cleanup, it is simply part of the job.

Highveld summer storm season

Johannesburg's thunderstorm season runs roughly from October through March. During this period the Highveld experiences some of the most intense electrical storms and straight-line winds in the southern hemisphere. Trees that appear healthy can become projectiles within minutes.

Oct, Mar Primary risk window on the Highveld
100+ km/h Recorded gusts during severe cells
Eucalyptus, Blue Gum & Poplar Particularly prone to storm failure
Pre-season check Book a pruning assessment in September

The best way to avoid an emergency call-out is a pre-season tree pruning and risk assessment in late August or September. We identify weak branch unions, over-extended limbs, and trees with compromised root systems before the storms arrive, and we give you an honest, written recommendation. No upselling, ever.

If a storm has already passed and you are assessing your property: be cautious of trees that have shed large limbs but still look intact. A partially damaged tree can be more dangerous than a fallen one. If in doubt, call us for a free assessment.

Insurance & storm-damage claims

South African short-term insurers generally cover tree-fall damage to structures, vehicles, and walls when the event is sudden and accidental, such as a storm. They typically do not cover the cost of removing a tree unless it has caused direct damage to an insured item. Check your policy schedule carefully.

  1. 1 Document everything immediately. Photograph the damage from multiple angles, in good light, before any debris is moved. Include the full extent of the affected area, the structure, and the tree itself.
  2. 2 Notify your insurer the same day. Most policies require prompt notification. Log the claim reference number before you do anything else.
  3. 3 Request emergency repairs to prevent further damage. Insurers typically allow reasonable emergency work to prevent worsening, temporary tarping, debris removal, and making the structure watertight. Keep all receipts.
  4. 4 Ask us for a written site assessment. We provide a clear, dated written report documenting the tree's condition, the likely cause of failure, the work performed, and the final state of the site. Many of our clients find this document invaluable when engaging their assessors.
  5. 5 Keep all invoices and correspondence. A full paper trail, from first call to final cleanup invoice, supports your claim and speeds up settlement.

We are happy to coordinate directly with an assessor or loss adjuster on your behalf. Simply let us know when you call.

Common questions

Emergency tree removal FAQ

How quickly can you get to me after I call?

For genuine emergencies, a tree on a structure, a blocked access route, or a situation involving power lines, we aim to be on-site within two to four hours during normal conditions. During active storm events, response times may extend as we work through multiple call-outs simultaneously. We will always give you a realistic ETA when you call and keep you updated.

Our emergency line is staffed around the clock: 0860 017 435.

Do you work weekends and after hours?

Our standard hours are Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 18:00. For genuine emergencies we operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including public holidays. Emergency call-outs outside standard hours carry a call-out fee, which we will quote you clearly before dispatching a crew. There are no surprises on your invoice.

The tree has fallen on power lines, what do I do?

Your safety comes first. Keep everyone, including yourself, well away from the tree and any lines it may be touching. Do not approach, do not touch the tree, and do not attempt to move vehicles out from under it.

Call Eskom on 0860 037 566 (or your local municipality for distribution lines) to report the downed lines. Then call us on 0860 017 435. We will coordinate with the utility to get power isolated before our team approaches the tree. We do not cut near live conductors under any circumstances.

Will my insurance cover the tree removal cost?

Coverage depends entirely on your specific policy. Most South African short-term insurers will cover the cost of removing a tree if it has caused damage to an insured structure, your roof, wall, garage, or vehicle, as part of the claim for that structural damage. They do not typically cover the removal of a tree that fell but landed clear of any insured property.

We recommend calling your insurer immediately after securing the scene. We can provide a written site assessment and a dated invoice to support your claim. Many clients find that having a professional assessment on record simplifies the process considerably.
