The first thing most people in Alberton want to know when they’re looking at a tree that needs to come down is: how much? It’s a reasonable question. And the honest answer is that it depends, but the variables are more straightforward than most people expect, and you shouldn’t need to call three companies to find out what a fair price looks like.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know that the worst thing a tree company can do is quote one number and charge another. Here’s how we approach the pricing conversation honestly, and what you can expect the whole job to involve.

What actually determines the price of a tree removal

Tree felling isn’t priced by the tree, it’s priced by the job. A tree that’s standing in open ground thirty metres from any structure, with wide gate access for a chipper truck, is a very different job from the same size tree wedged between a boundary wall and a swimming pool with a gate barely wide enough for a wheelbarrow. Both might be the same height, but one is half a morning and the other is a full day with two climbers. The price reflects the actual work involved.

Here are the factors that move the price up or down:

Size and species. A large gum tree has more timber than a medium ornamental. More timber means more cuts, more lowering time, more chipping. Some species also require specific disposal because they’re invasive, wattle, for instance, can’t just be mulched on-site in the same way as a non-invasive species.

Location and access. How close is the tree to the house, the pool, the power lines, the boundary? Is there room for a chipper truck on the property or are we hand-carrying everything out through a gate? Can we use a mobile elevated platform or does the garden require climbers only? Access is often the single biggest determinant of job time.

What’s underneath and around it. Sectional dismantling, bringing the tree down in pieces with each section lowered on ropes, takes more time than a straight fell, but it’s the right method when things are nearby. The presence of a roof, a wall, a vehicle, a pool cage or overhead lines all affect the method, which affects the price.

Whether you want the stump removed. Stump grinding is a separate step with separate equipment. Some homeowners want it done immediately; others are happy to deal with it later. We quote it separately so you can make that call.

Cleanup and disposal. Our quotes always include site cleanup and green waste removal. It’s not an add-on. But if you want specific things done with the timber, firewood rounds stacked for your braai, grindings spread as mulch, tell us at quote stage and we’ll factor it in.

Honest quoting, no surprises on the day

We’ve heard the stories and we don’t find them funny: a company quotes one price, starts the job, and then “discovers” reasons why the price needs to go up mid-work. You’re in a difficult position at that point, the tree is half down, your garden is blocked, and it’s easier to pay than to argue.

We give you a written, itemised quote before we start. If something genuinely changes between the quote and the job, a storm comes through and the tree shifts, say, or we identify significant decay at the base that changes the method, we call you and explain it before we proceed. We don’t use that as a mechanism to bump the price on a healthy job that was quoted correctly.

Removal, stumps and leaving your garden clean

Once you’ve accepted the quote and we’ve scheduled the work, the job itself is as straightforward as we can make it. We arrive with the equipment suited to the specific job, not a standard kit that may or may not work for your particular tree. For sectional removals in tight Alberton gardens, that means climbers or a platform, rigging ropes, a chipper truck positioned for best access, and a grinder for the stump.

The tree comes down in a sequence we’ve planned: the crown first, the main scaffold limbs, then the trunk in sections. Each piece is controlled on the way down. Nothing drops free through another structure. Chipping runs continuously to keep the working area clear.

Stump grinding follows once the timber is cleared. We bring the stump down to 150-300 mm below ground, deep enough that you can pave over it, turf over it, or plant into the space without worrying about a hollow underneath as the root material decomposes. The grindings are either raked into your beds as mulch or taken away, whichever you prefer.

When we leave, the site is clean. There’s no “final quote for cleanup” that surfaces at the end. The sweep-up is part of the job.
