Every Capetonian knows the feeling. It’s a hot February afternoon, the south-easter has been building since noon, and by four o’clock the famous “Cape Doctor” is doing what it does best, except this time it’s not just clearing the smog off the mountain. A branch the size of a small car is hanging over your driveway, or worse, a whole tree has come down across the fence onto the neighbour’s side. That’s when you need a tree felling team who actually knows Cape Town.

Why Cape Town Trees Come Down Differently

The Western Cape’s Mediterranean climate is not kind to trees in the way that a more predictable, summer-rainfall climate might be. Here you get the worst of both worlds: a summer that can go months without rain, followed by winter storms that dump 100mm in a weekend. Trees that have spent summer sending roots sideways in search of moisture are suddenly sitting in waterlogged soil when the winter rains arrive, and a strong north-westerly can do the rest.

Then there’s the south-easter. From roughly October through March, the Cape Doctor sweeps across the Peninsula with gusts that regularly exceed 60 km/h and occasionally hit 100 km/h or more. The wind is particularly vicious in suburbs like Tamboerskloof, De Waterkant, Oranjezicht and Green Point, where the Bowl acts as a natural funnel. Stone pines, those gorgeous spreading trees that give so much character to the Southern Suburbs, have a notorious habit of dropping enormous limbs in these conditions. The wood is heavy, the drops are sudden, and if your stone pine is near a structure, a parked car or a power line, that’s a genuine risk.

Cape Town’s Oaks: Magnificent, Protected, and Occasionally Problematic

The oak-lined avenues of the Southern Suburbs, Newlands, Rondebosch, Claremont, Wynberg, are among the most beautiful streetscapes in the country. Many of these trees are old enough to have been planted by the city’s earliest European settlers, and some are formally recognised as heritage or protected trees.

This matters enormously if you’re thinking about removing or significantly pruning an oak. In Cape Town, certain trees, particularly older or larger specimens, may fall under municipal or provincial protection, meaning you’ll need a permit before any work begins. We always advise checking with the City of Cape Town or a registered arborist before proceeding with oak removal. Where oaks can be pruned, crown thinning, deadwood removal, weight reduction, we do it properly, following best arboricultural practice. We do not “top” trees. Invasive Aliens: The Other Side of Cape Town’s Tree Problem

Not every Cape Town tree is worth keeping. Blue gum (eucalyptus), Port Jackson willow and rooikrans have colonised significant stretches of the mountain slopes, river corridors and suburban gardens. These species are water-hungry, fire-prone and, in the case of blue gum, capable of spectacularly sudden limb drop without warning, even on calm days.

If you’re near the mountain, or own a larger property on the outskirts of the city, clearing invasive aliens is both ecologically responsible and a genuine fire-mitigation measure. The Western Cape’s summer wildfire risk is real and it is near. The January 2021 fires above Newlands and the periodic blazes on Signal Hill and Lion’s Head are reminders that the mountain is not a safe backdrop, it’s a living fire-risk boundary.

Sectional Dismantling and Tight-Space Felling

Cape Town’s older suburbs were not designed with large trees in mind, or rather, the large trees arrived well after the houses. In gardens from Vredehoek to Claremont, it’s common to find a stone pine or blue gum that has grown until it’s 20 metres tall and completely hemmed in by the house, a boundary wall, a garage and the neighbour’s kitchen extension.

This is where sectional dismantling, taking the tree apart from the top down, one piece at a time, is the only sensible approach. Our team uses rigging and, where necessary, crane-assisted removal to bring sections down safely in spaces where a conventional fell is simply not possible. Stump Grinding and Garden Restoration

After the tree is down, you’re often left with a stump that’s both an eyesore and a tripping hazard. Our stump grinding service takes stumps to 150-300 mm below ground level, far enough to landscape, pave or turf over without the stump causing problems. In Cape Town’s compact urban gardens, a cleared stump can open up meaningful space.

We include full cleanup in every job: wood chips, sawdust, leaf matter and debris leave with us. If you want the chips left for garden mulch, just say the word, it’s excellent mulch, especially for fynbos-adjacent gardens where organic matter matters.
