Invasive Species in Chatsworth: Gums, Bugweed, and the Rest

Chatsworth’s subtropical position, humid, warm, well-watered through summer, means invasive alien species thrive here just as they do across coastal KwaZulu-Natal. Eucalyptus gums are common, particularly on older properties and near the road reserves. Many were planted for screening or shade years ago and have since grown to a size where they’re pushing structures and dropping large branches without warning.

Bugweed (Solanum mauritianum) is present throughout the suburb, particularly on south-facing slopes and along the back fence lines where there’s some shade and moisture. It’s a Category 1b invasive under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, which means landowners are required to control it. We cut it down and grind the stumps out to prevent resprouting.

Syringa (Melia azedarach) is common throughout Chatsworth’s older gardens. It looks like a perfectly reasonable shade tree, and it’s been planted widely because of its fast growth and dense canopy, but it’s a listed invasive that seeds prolifically and displaces indigenous species.
