The Tree Species That Define Kimberley’s Gardens and Streetscapes

Most of the tree work in Kimberley’s residential suburbs involves a fairly recognisable cast of characters:

Pepper trees (Schinus molle) are everywhere, planted for their fast growth and drought tolerance, they’ve become defining features of older gardens and some streetscapes. The problem is that they spread aggressively, the root systems are expansive and surface-hungry, and once they’ve got under a boundary wall or into a driveway there’s no subtle fix. Many of the pepper trees we fell in Kimberley are structurally sound but simply planted too close to something that can’t move.

Camel thorn (Vachellia erioloba) is magnificent when it has space, and rather less so after twenty-five years unchecked against a garden wall. As a protected species, felling it requires municipal and/or DFFE permit consideration before work begins. We’ll advise on this during the site visit.

Planted gums (eucalyptus) feature heavily in older parts of Kimberley, planted in the mining era for shade and windbreaks. They’re now large, some are declining, and many are positioned where nobody would plant today. Large gum removals need careful planning, heavy crowns, dense wood, deep stumps. We bring the right equipment and think the job through from the start.

Working in Kimberley’s Established Suburbs

Hadison Park is one of Kimberley’s older residential areas with a generous stock of mature trees. Driveways uplifted by roots, boundary walls pushed by slow-growing pressure, stoeps cracked by surface root activity, these jobs need stump removal and grinding as a follow-through, otherwise the problem resurfaces within a few years.

Royldene tends to have somewhat newer gardens, but the tree work here often involves trees that were planted too close to pools or entertainment areas and have now become a maintenance headache. Pepper tree leaf drop into pools is a genuine quality-of-life issue, and we remove quite a few of these for exactly that reason.

Monument Heights has a mix of species from different planting eras; larger properties here often have trees that have never been properly managed. Decades of crown accumulation creates structural risk. Sometimes a proper pruning intervention recovers the situation, other times felling is the responsible call.

Drought, Roots, and Infrastructure

In a semi-arid climate, tree roots explore widely and deeply in search of moisture. That means underground pipes, irrigation lines, and footings are more likely to encounter roots here than in wetter climates, and root damage tends to develop slowly and invisibly until it’s fairly advanced.

If you’ve noticed plumbing behaving oddly, paving lifting in a pattern, or cracks in a retaining wall, a tree root inspection is worth including. We assess the likely source during the site visit and give you a straight view of the options.

What a Proper Stump Grind Looks Like Here

Kimberley’s soils, compacted, often calcareous, not especially forgiving, make manual stump removal impractical for anything other than small stumps. Our grinding equipment works to 150-300 mm below the existing ground level, reducing the stump and root flare to wood chip that can be raked out and either left as mulch or removed from site.

For large gum stumps in particular, this is a multi-pass job, the stumps are wide, the wood is hard, and the process takes time. But it’s done properly: no surface stump left to rot over years and attract termites, no root flare to trip over or catch lawnmower blades.

Stump removal and grinding is included as a quoted add-on to any felling job, or can be booked separately for stumps left from previous work.
