Bloemfontein earns its nickname every spring, but nobody writes postcards about what comes before it: six weeks of hard Free State frost that cracks branches, splits bark on old gum trees, and turns half a pepper tree into a brown, drooping liability. If you have mature planted trees in Westdene, Dan Pienaar or Universitas, you already know this story. The warm summer lulls you into thinking everything is fine, then one July morning you find a limb on your lawn and the rest of the tree leaning badly.

Tree Hugger Collective has been doing tree felling across Bloemfontein and the broader Free State long enough to know that the city’s trees are as mixed as its history, enormous Victorian-era plane trees along older avenues, blue gums that were planted decades ago and have long since outgrown their welcome, jacarandas that are the wrong species for a frost zone but planted here anyway, and thousands of pepper trees that regenerate from stumps unless you deal with the roots properly. What Bloemfontein’s Climate Does to Its Trees

The Free State Highveld is not kind to anything that was not built for frost. Temperatures in Bloem drop below zero regularly between May and August, and the plateau wind makes it feel colder still. What this means for garden trees is predictable: frost cracks along the cambium layer of plane trees and ornamental cherries, dieback at the crown of poorly established eucalyptus, and split main stems on pepper trees that held water over summer and then froze.

Drought stress compounds the problem. Bloemfontein averages roughly 550 mm of rain a year, most of it falling between October and March in unpredictable afternoon downpours. Trees that get too much water in one hit and nothing for weeks afterwards develop shallow root systems and brittle wood, which is exactly why so many Langenhoven Park gardens saw storm damage removals after the 2023 summer storms tore through.

We assess frost-damaged and drought-stressed trees carefully before quoting. Sometimes a tree looks terrible in August but recovers with a proper crown reduction and thinning. Sometimes it is structurally compromised and needs to come down. We will tell you the truth either way, no upselling, no manufacturing urgency where none exists.

The Trees We Deal With Most in Bloemfontein

Eucalyptus (blue gum). Planted heavily during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as windbreaks and for firewood. Many of these trees are now 15-20 metres tall, growing over rooflines, shading out entire back gardens, and dropping branches without warning. Sectional dismantling is standard here, you cannot fell a 15-metre gum straight down in a suburban Westdene plot. Our crews work from the top down, rigging sections to the ground in a controlled sequence.

Plane trees. Magnificent street and garden trees that can live for over a century, but they develop serious structural faults as they age. Included bark at major branch unions is common, and that’s where splits happen. We carry out crown reductions and tree pruning that extend the life of a good plane rather than removing it unnecessarily, but when a tree is hollow at the base and leaning over a wall, it must come down.

Pepper trees (Schinus molle). The Free State’s unofficial suburban tree, fast growing, drought-tolerant, and genuinely lovely when well-managed. The problem is that they are difficult to kill. Cut one at the stump and it will regrow vigorously from the roots. Our stump grinding service takes the stump 150-300 mm below the soil surface, which is the only reliable way to stop re-sprouting.

Jacarandas. Technically subtropical, but planted widely across Bloem regardless. They survive the frost in most years but suffer significant dieback in a bad winter. Crown reduction and dead-wooding keeps them healthy and reduces the risk of large limb drop onto vehicles or roofs.

Stump Removal in Bloemfontein’s Rocky Soils

Free State soils are notoriously variable. You can have deep red soil in one part of a garden and hit hardpan caliche 200 mm down in another. Old gum stumps in rocky soil are a particular challenge, the wood is dense, the roots run far, and a standard grinder gets through the easy parts and then labours in the stone.

We use commercial-grade grinding equipment calibrated for this, and we quote honestly on difficult stumps before we start rather than discovering the problem halfway through and asking for more money. The goal is always 150-300 mm below the existing ground surface, deep enough to turf or replant without the stump interfering.
