Local tree felling guide

Welkom was built on a drawing board in the late 1940s, wide, grid-like streets, generous verges, and enough space between properties to park a combine harvester. The planners were thorough. What they did not account for was what would happen seventy-odd years later when the eucalyptus, pine and poplar trees they planted along those wide verges decided to become very large indeed, and started lifting paving, cracking water mains, and dropping limbs onto the orderly streets below.

If you live in Naudeville, Riebeeckstad, Dagbreek or anywhere in the old goldfields town, you have seen this play out. The municipality handles some of it. Most of it lands in the lap of whoever’s property is closest to the problem. Tree Hugger Collective has been doing tree felling here long enough to understand how the Welkom tree situation works, and we are set up to handle the work professionally, big verge trees, old mine-era gum stands, and the occasional overgrown garden that nobody has touched since the gold boom.

Welkom’s Unique Tree Problem

Most South African towns grew organically and their tree canopy reflects that, a mix of species that seeded themselves, were planted at random, and grew at different rates. Welkom is different. Because it was purpose-built to house mining workers quickly, the street planting was done systematically and at scale, with fast-growing species that would establish quickly and provide shade on the Highveld. Blue gum (Eucalyptus spp.) and various pine varieties were popular choices.

Fast-forward to the present: those trees are old, in some cases structurally compromised, and growing in soil that has been periodically disturbed by the underground mining activity that the whole town was built around. Subsidence is a real issue in parts of Welkom, and a tree that was vertical a decade ago may have developed a lean that warrants attention. Add the Highveld’s dry winters and hard frost, and you have conditions that accelerate wood decay in older specimens.

This is not alarmism, a great many of Welkom’s street and garden trees are perfectly healthy and should be pruned and kept. But the ones that need to come down should not be left. The Highveld wind in August is no joke, and a rotten-cored gum does not give much warning.

What We Do in Welkom

Large eucalyptus and pine removal. These are high-volume jobs for us. Mine-era gum stands in older residential areas like Riebeeckstad frequently involve multiple trees in close proximity, tangled canopies, and not much room to work. We do sectional dismantling, working down from the crown in controlled sections, rigging larger pieces rather than letting them drop. It takes longer than straight felling but it is the only responsible approach on a suburban property.

Stump removal. A gum stump left in the ground will sucker aggressively. We use commercial grinding equipment to take stumps 150-300 mm below the surface, enough to plant over or turf without the stump or roots interfering. Welkom’s Highveld topsoil is generally workable but can be compacted and sandy in parts; we factor this into the quote. Full details on our stump grinding page.

Crown reduction and pruning. Not every tree in Welkom needs to come out. Some of the older gums and planes are structurally sound and worth keeping with a good crown reduction and deadwood removal. We offer tree pruning and trimming as a service in its own right, thinning, crown lifting, reduction, and we never top trees, which weakens structure and causes long-term problems.

Emergency response. Welkom’s summer thunderstorms can be violent. The town’s flat topography gives wind very little to break against before it hits a tree. When a storm brings down a large pine or gum onto a property, we respond 24/7, same number, 0860 017 435, day or night.

Dealing with Municipal vs. Private Tree Responsibility

One of the more common calls we get from Welkom residents is about verge trees. The tree is technically on municipal land, it has a major dead limb over the pavement, and the municipality’s response time is measured in months. Where the risk is on private property, where a dead limb from a verge tree is hanging over your house, car or driveway, residents often engage us directly to deal with the hazard and then pursue the municipality for cost recovery separately. We can provide detailed written documentation of the work done, which supports that process.

We will not do work on a tree without the appropriate permissions, but we can advise on how to navigate the Matjhabeng Local Municipality process and what documentation you will need.

The Free State Highveld and What It Does to Trees

Welkom sits on the flat Free State Highveld at around 1,350 metres above sea level. The landscape is open grassland, there are no indigenous forests to speak of, and the trees in town are all planted species that were introduced. This matters because planted species in an environment they were not adapted for can behave unpredictably when put under climate stress.

The combination of hard frost (temperatures regularly below -5°C in midwinter), a long dry season from April to September, and occasional extreme summer hail is tough on non-indigenous species. Trees weaken, develop internal decay, and eventually fail, usually in the wind or under snow load, which Welkom does occasionally see in bad years. Proactive management is genuinely cheaper than emergency removal after the fact, both in cost and in damage to property.

We had an old gum on the verge side of our property in Riebeeckstad that was clearly in bad shape, a big section of the trunk was hollow and there was a lean we didn't like. Tree Hugger came out, confirmed the rot went deep, and removed the whole thing cleanly. They came back the following week with the grinder and sorted the stump. Straightforward, no drama, competitive price. Exactly what you want.

Good to know

Tree felling in Welkom: your questions answered

Can you remove trees on Welkom's wide verges without affecting traffic?

Yes. We have experience managing road-adjacent tree work and carry out traffic accommodation where needed. For major verge trees, we typically schedule work during low-traffic hours and use signage and spotters to manage the road safely. Large verge work may require municipal notification, we can advise on this for your specific situation.

How long does a large gum removal take in Welkom?

A single large eucalyptus, 15 metres and above, typically takes a full day for a two-person crew, including cleanup and loading. Multiple trees on the same property can often be done as a single operation more efficiently. We will give you a realistic timeframe in the quote.

Do you recycle the timber from removed trees?

Yes. Timber and green waste are removed from site and recycled wherever possible. We do not leave debris behind. If you want chips for mulch on the property, let us know when we quote, we can often arrange that at no extra cost.

Is there a callout charge for the on-site quote?

No. Free on-site quotes, no obligation. We come to the property, assess the trees, and give you a written price before any work starts.

Do you work in all Welkom suburbs and surrounding towns?

We cover Welkom proper, Naudeville, Riebeeckstad, Dagbreek, Bronville and surrounding areas, as well as nearby towns in the Matjhabeng area. For the full service area see areas we serve. For work in the Free State capital, see our Bloemfontein page.
