Five signs it’s time to take a tree down

1. The crown is thinning out of season. A tree that’s dropping leaves or losing canopy density in summer, when it should be at its fullest, is a tree in trouble. Dead branches through the middle of an otherwise leafy crown, patches of dieback that spread from the tips inward, bark falling off sections of the trunk: these are the tree’s distress signals. Fungal infection, root damage, borer activity, the cause matters less than the pattern. A declining tree doesn’t recover on its own, and the further it declines, the more dangerous and the harder to remove it becomes.

2. The base of the trunk is soft, hollow or weeping sap. The trunk base is the last place most homeowners look, usually because it’s surrounded by garden beds or years of leaf litter. It’s worth checking. Spongy wood, visible cavities, discoloured weeping near the root collar, or a distinctive mushroomy smell can all indicate internal rot. A tree can carry significant rot internally for years and still look fine above the collar, and then fail without warning. 3. The roots are lifting, cracking or undermining something. 5. It’s dead, and you haven’t dealt with it yet. A standing dead tree is a timer, not a tree. The wood dries out and becomes brittle; the root system loses the tension that was holding it in place; the bark falls away and exposes the interior to moisture and insects. Some species are structurally sound for years after they die, a very dry old acacia can stand for a long time. Others degrade fast. Either way, a dead tree on a residential plot in Boksburg is a liability, and the question is only whether it comes down on your terms or in the next big storm.

And the houses, while they may have more room around them than a complex townhouse, are also older and more vulnerable to impact damage.

We don’t top trees. If you’ve had a company offer to “cut the top off” your tree as a way of reducing its height, get a second opinion. Topping creates stump regrowth that’s weaker, faster-growing and more likely to fail than the structure you started with. There are correct methods for reducing crown volume, thinning, selecting reduction cuts back to lateral branches, and they leave you with a tree that’s genuinely safer, not just shorter.
