On one side you’ve got the Braamfontein Spruit, winding through its ribbon of riverine bush with willows trailing in the current and wild figs elbowing out over the bank. On the other you’ve got the manicured gardens of residential Rivonia, the office parks that run along Rivonia Road, and the complexes and cluster homes tucked in between. Riverside trees: what the Spruit produces and what to do about it

The Braamfontein Spruit is genuinely beautiful, and the tree life along it is generous. Crack willows (Salix fragilis) in particular are everywhere, fast-growing, picturesque, and comprehensively terrible neighbours once they reach full size. A mature crack willow can top fifteen metres, has roots that seek moisture the way a heat-seeking missile seeks a plane, and earns its name by the tendency to split and drop limbs with very little warning. Properties backing onto the Spruit often find willow roots have worked their way into drain pipes, irrigation systems and the footings of boundary walls without anyone noticing until something blocks or cracks.

Water-berry (Syzygium cordatum) and Cape bush willow grow along the Spruit banks too, and while these are indigenous and generally better-behaved, they still require attention when they’ve been left unmanaged for years and have grown out over neighbouring properties. We’re experienced in working close to the watercourse, sometimes the only sensible approach involves rigging from the bank and lowering timber across the water rather than trying to drag logs through the riverine vegetation. It takes a bit more planning, but it gets done cleanly.

If you’re on a property that borders the Spruit or has mature riverside trees in the garden, the most useful thing you can do is have someone come out and look at them properly. Willows especially can look vigorous and healthy from a distance while quietly rotting at the base or developing significant structural defects. Commercial and office-park tree work: around the tenants, not through them

Rivonia Road and the blocks off it are serious business territory, logistics companies, financial services, tech firms and everything in between. The trees in these office parks are doing a real job: shade for the carpark, screening between buildings, a bit of green that makes the place feel less like a concrete slab. When one of those trees becomes a problem it tends to be a significant problem, because a large tree over a busy car park or close to a building entrance isn’t something you can just leave.

The complication is always timing. You can’t take a crane into a packed office park on a Tuesday morning and expect business as usual to carry on around you. We do a lot of commercial Rivonia work on Saturdays, early starts on quiet Sundays, or in the early hours before tenants arrive, whatever the facilities team needs. We’re not a crew that shows up, knocks the job out and leaves the mess for someone else to deal with: cleanup is built in, and the carpark or access road gets left clear and usable.

Felling, pruning and cleanup across residential Rivonia

Residential Rivonia sits at a comfortable suburban scale, plots with proper gardens, mature street trees, the kind of established planting that makes the suburb look the way it does. The tree challenges here are the usual northern-suburbs roster: large specimens that were planted with optimism and have now outgrown their space, trees that were healthy but have started to fail, and trees in awkward positions with walls, pools, roofs and power lines making a straightforward felling impossible.

We take trees down in sections when we need to, a climber works up through the canopy, pieces come down on ropes, and nothing swings loose. For very large or very constrained removals we’ll bring in a crane to lift sections out over obstacles cleanly. The decision about which method to use comes from looking at the specific tree and the specific site, not from a preference for one way of doing things.

Pruning is a big part of Rivonia work too. A lot of the trees in the suburb are at the age where a proper crown reduction, some deadwooding and a bit of structural thinning will buy them another decade or two of safe useful life, and that’s a much better outcome than an expensive removal. We do this properly: real arboricultural pruning, not a rough hack-back that leaves the tree worse off. We don’t top trees. The cuts we make are ones the tree can actually grow over and recover from.

Stump grinding is worth mentioning separately because it’s often treated as an afterthought but rarely is. An unground stump in a Rivonia garden stays a problem: trip hazard, obstacle to replanting, termite habitat, and for species like syringa and eucalyptus a serious source of regrowth suckers.
