Tree felling in Bryanston: big trees, deep plots and knowing when not to cut

There’s a particular quality to a Bryanston garden. The plots run deep, the canopy is dense and layered, and the trees aren’t polite little ornamentals, they’re the real thing. Strangler figs that have been growing since the suburb was farmland. Cape chestnuts with crowns that spread across three neighbouring properties. Old jacarandas whose roots have been quietly mapping the drains since the 1970s. Walking into a mature Bryanston garden is a completely different experience from most of Gauteng, and working in one requires a completely different level of care.

Working among established trees in a leafy suburb

The thing about mature gardens is that every tree is part of a system. Remove one dominant specimen and the microclimate shifts: suddenly a neighbour’s tree that was sheltered is getting the full brunt of summer wind, or a row of shrubs that lived in cool dappled shade is burning in direct afternoon sun. That’s not a reason to avoid removing a tree that genuinely needs to go, but it is a reason to think the whole situation through before we start, and to do the work in a way that protects what stays.

In Bryanston specifically, we regularly work in plots where a single tree has limbs stretching over the roof, the pool, the driveway and the neighbour’s garden all at once. Taking it down in a straightforward fell is rarely an option. Our standard approach is sectional dismantling: a climber works up into the canopy and brings the tree down piece by piece, each limb and section lowered on ropes to a controlled landing zone. For the really large specimens, an old white stinkwood or a multi-stem fig near the house, we’ll bring in rigging equipment or a crane to lift heavy sections clean over structures rather than swinging them through the canopy. It’s methodical work, it takes longer than a simple chop, and it’s the only responsible way to do it.

The access question is also worth mentioning. Bryanston’s properties often have perimeter walls and narrow garden gates, so our equipment has to be compact or our team has to work by hand further from the road. Why pruning often matters more here than removal

One of the more satisfying parts of our work in Bryanston is the number of trees we end up not removing. Deadwooding removes the branches that have already failed or are failing, which eliminates drop risk without touching the living tree. None of this is topping, the practice of simply slashing the crown to a flat surface, which looks dramatic but produces weak regrowth that fails far faster than the original structure. We don’t do it, we don’t recommend it, and when we see a tree that’s been topped by someone else we can usually explain why it now looks the way it does.

Bryanston’s mature garden character is genuinely worth preserving. A 25-year-old tree is irreplaceable on any practical timeline. Before we fell anything in this suburb, we make sure removal is actually the right answer, not just the easy one.

Stumps, roots and getting the garden back

When removal is the right call, the stump is the next chapter. In Bryanston’s deep, established gardens the stumps we deal with tend to be large, sometimes enormous, and the root systems spread well beyond the visible footprint of the tree. A stump left in place in this kind of garden becomes a termite magnet, a source of fungal spread to neighbouring trees, and, with many indigenous and exotic species, a producer of persistent suckers for years.

Our stump grinder brings the stump down to between 150 and 300 millimetres below surface level, enough to lay paving over, turf over or plant into without any subsidence risk from a rotting mass underneath. For very large root-plates near a structure, we plan the grinding carefully to avoid undermining anything, the line between “grinding out the stump” and “destabilising the paving” in a dense garden is narrower than it looks.

All the organic material, branchwood, chippings, grindings, gets cleared and either mulched back into your beds (it breaks down beautifully) or removed from site. Bryanston gardens are generally too well-loved to leave looking like a building site, so our cleanup standard is deliberate.
