Hatfield is one of those Pretoria neighbourhoods that looks effortlessly beautiful in October, jacaranda petals carpeting every pavement, diplomatic flags fluttering behind tall boundary walls, and students on bicycles threading between embassies and lecture halls. But behind that purple-tinged postcard, there’s a lot of arboricultural reality. Old trees in narrow stands, root systems lifting paving slabs, storm-damaged branches dangling above parked cars, and landlords managing multiple rental properties who need someone reliable, not someone who’ll inflate a quote once they see the address. Tree Hugger Collective has been doing tree felling across the Tshwane region for long enough to know that Hatfield has its own particular rhythm, and we work with it.

What Makes Hatfield Trees Different

The soil profile along the Hatfield ridge is fairly typical Highveld clay-loam: holds moisture after summer rain, hardens to near-concrete in the dry season. Jacaranda roots are famously opportunistic in these conditions, finding every pipe joint and paving crack within reach. Older trees near the University of Pretoria precinct and along Hilda Street have canopies that were never really managed, they just grew, year after year, until a branch over a boundary became someone’s legal problem.

Diplomatic residences tend to have better-kept grounds simply because there’s maintenance staff, but the mid-sized rental properties, the converted homes on streets like Burnett and Arcadia, are often a different story. A tree planted in 1980 by the original owner is now a significant structure that a landlord renting to students has neither the time nor the expertise to manage safely. That’s where we come in. Street and Verge Trees: Who’s Responsible?

This is probably the most common question we get from Hatfield residents and landlords. A tree growing in the verge, that strip of ground between the boundary wall and the kerb, typically belongs to the City of Tshwane, not the property owner. You cannot legally fell it without a permit, and even heavy pruning should be cleared with the municipality first.

What that means in practice: if a street tree is dropping branches onto your driveway or blocking signage, you need to log a service request with the city before engaging a private contractor to touch it. We can advise you on this process and, where work on private trees near the verge requires careful sequencing to avoid city infrastructure, we factor that into the plan. We do not encourage shortcuts that could expose you to fines or liability.

For trees that are unambiguously on private property, the process is more straightforward, we assess, quote (for free, on-site), and schedule. Hatfield’s density means we often work in sections, using rigging and controlled lowering rather than freefall drops that would damage neighbouring structures or parked vehicles.

Jacaranda Care: What’s Worth Knowing

Hatfield is arguably the jacaranda heart of Pretoria. The trees lining the avenues near the university are part of the suburb’s identity, and no one’s suggesting wholesale removal. But jacarandas do have a lifespan, and some of the older specimens are showing it, hollowing trunks, deadwood in the upper canopy, or root systems that have simply run out of space.

For healthy jacarandas, the right intervention is usually a selective crown reduction and deadwood removal, not “topping,” which stresses the tree and produces weak, fast-growing regrowth that creates more problems within a few seasons. We assess each tree individually. Sometimes a light lift (removing lower limbs) is all that’s needed to clear sightlines and reduce wind resistance. Sometimes the tree is beyond reasonable intervention and removal, followed by stump grinding, is the honest recommendation.
